Ask for a record

You have the right to ask, and they have to answer.

Liberia’s Freedom of Information Act gives any person the right to request a public record. You do not need to be a journalist, a lawyer, or a citizen of any particular county. You do not have to say why you want it.

FreeThere is no fee to make a request.

30days the office has to respond to you.

0reasons you need to give for asking.

Four steps

Step 1

Name the record, not the topic

Ask for “the FY2026 county budget for Grand Bassa”, not “information about county spending”. A specific document is harder to refuse.

Step 2

Send it to the right office

Every case on this site names the office that holds the record, with its public contact details. Copy the address from the case.

Step 3

Keep the date you sent it

The 30 days start from that date. Screenshot the sent message. If you send it to us too, we start the same clock publicly.

Step 4

Tell us what came back

A reply, a refusal, or silence all matter. Each one updates the case, and a released document closes it for everyone.

We have already written the letter

Every open case has a request drafted against it, addressed to the right office and naming the exact record. Add your name, send it from your own email, and the case shows a request is in motion.
